Youth Football To National
League In Eight Seasons
|
|
| Luton Town Ladies were formed in 1997. In those early days we only had youth teams. Then at the start of the 2001/02 season we fielded our first adult team (pictured left) and entered The Southern Region League Division 1. A creditable 3rd place finish was achieved in that first season. 2002/03 was even better. Losing just one game we finished 2nd. That meant a play off game to decide promotion. Unfortunately that ended in a 1-0 defeat against Wycombe Wanderers. |

| It was a case of 3rd time lucky as promotion to the Southern Premier Division was won at the end of the 2003/04 season when we finished runners up once again, but no play off this time. We could not have really expected what happened next. Another runners up spot and another promotion at the end of the 2004/05 season. A run of six wins including an away win at champions Reading and a draw in the final seven matches ended with promotion being clinched on the final day of the season. Promotion meant that we would be playing in The South West Combination. The next three seasons saw us travel to far flung places in Devon and Cornwall, such as Newquay and Plymouth. Times were tough, flirtation with relegation in 2006 was the lowest point, but we came through that had two mid table finishes in 2007 and 2008. The FA in their wisdom transfered us to the South East Combination for the start of the 2008/09 season. Although the move was not universally welcomed within the club, it proved to be the stepping stone which led to promotion to The National League. The season started with a 7-0 win at Northampton Town, and the bandwagon just rolled on from there. The League Championship, which was our 1st such piece of silverware was won on the back of an undefeated away record and the team celebrated a job well done. Promotion meant what? Being placed in The Northern Division. Visits as far away as Newcastle and Manchester. It proved to much, and after one season it was relegation back to The SE Combination. How did we finish up playing in The Northern Division. Well that is The FA for you. Away from League football, we have won The County Cup an unpresidented four consecutive seasons. Since 2001 a good part of our success has been due to having a |
| strong and thriving youth section, which has provided many players that have graduated to 1st team football. However that is now suffering due to less girls coming into the game. The FA have a lot to answer for in their failings to promote the female game at grassroots level | |
