Bedfordshire County Cup Final

Bedford Town Bells 1 - Luton Town Ladies 5
|
||||
| The rearranged final
date did Luton no favours sandwiched between two very tough league trips
to AFC Bournemouth and Plymouth Argyle whilst Bells had no Sunday game
to accrue injuries.
A number of Luton players were carrying knocks but were patched up and sent out with a specific game plan on a heavy pitch with driving rain. None of this made any difference to Town as adrenalin kicked in and they almost took the lead in the first five minutes when Kaylee Owen`s glancing header from a corner just eluded the far post. Luton were dominant early on and it was no surprise when they took the lead when Micky Taylor won two tackles and played in Bex Kane whose low shot skidded in at the near post to make it 1-0. Town then grabbed the game by the throat and piled on the pressure and as Kane wriggled free again she was about to shoot when she was tackled from behind by the last player 10 yards from goal. Penalty - but amazingly the referee decided that there was no further action required and Micky Taylor placed the ball on the spot and fired home the spot kick. Bedford were reeling by now and Kane beat her player down the right crossing into the danger area where Amy Summerfield arrived to bundle the ball home to give Luton a 3-0 lead in the first half hour. Kane then rattled the crossbar and the rebound was netted by Owen who was adjudged to have been in an offside position when the initial shot was struck. Just before half time Bells were awarded a free kick wide on their left and as the ball was lofted into the area the conditions contributed to the ball eluding everyone and bouncing into the net. A 3-1 lead at the break was reward for a tidy first half performance from a determined Luton side.
Once the team were settled down after the break Janet Ligouri was introduced down the right and again displayed her ability in both attack and defence weaving her way into the final third and moving the ball to great effect. Bedford tried desperately to find their way past Town`s well marshalled defence and when they managed to do so Nikki Duncan was on hand to sweep up behind them.
As the Bedford defence began to tire more chances came Luton`s way and the Bells keeper did well on several occasions to keep her side within distance. However, it was the introduction of Laura Day which clinched the tie when she added the fourth goal sweeping in a pinpoint cross from Ligouri. Taylor curled a shot just wide of the post and once again the keeper did well to deny Kane with a fine block as she looked set to score. It was 5-1 and the icing was on the cake when Day controlled her shot from 20 yards but it appeared to lack sufficient power until the keeper was deceived by the bounce and she could only push the ball into the net off the inside of the post.
During the final 20 minutes there was a procession of decent chances for Luton but with one hand on the cup no one was too concerned about the final goal tally.
This was a pleasing performance from Luton within 48 hours of their last game and against a team that had lost just once in 2008. During the game a determined defence had restricted Bedford to just a single shot on goal and had created enough good chances to win two cup finals.
The final whistle brought celebrations as Town took the County trophy for the first time and completed an outstanding treble with the Under 15`s also crowned Junior Girls County champions and the Under 16`s Senior Girls champions.
The County champions were Nikki Duncan, Michelle Byrne, Emma Leete, Carly Cowell, Sarah Hawkins, Cath Tomlin, Amy Summerfield, Micky Taylor, Rebecca Kane, Kaylee Owen, Janet Ligouri, Laura Day, Becky Clark and our skipper Janine Daly. Well done to you all for wearing the shirt with such pride on the night.
In a remarkable display of sharp shooting our young `Super Sub` Laura Day has played around 70 minutes in this years County Cup adding a brace from the bench in the final to her record 8 goal salvo in the semi final.
Finally, many thanks to our generous team sponsors Brookes Redlion for providing the champagne on our return to Luton with the County Cup Unfortunately we do not have any pictures from this
memorable evening, unless that is you know different. If anybody does
have any then lets have them as soon as possible. ( email to m.macca@ntlworld.com
) On a more positive note, we should have some video footage
to show on the website sometime in the near future |
