Stockwood Park Athletics Stadium
|
| Stockwood Park Athletics Stadium is situated
in Stockwood Country Park in the south of Luton. The park was
at one time a private estate with a large mansion house. The
stable block from the original house still stands adjacent to
the stadium car park. In its later days as a private estate
it belonged the Ross - Skinners, a prominent Luton family. During
the second world war the house was converted for use as a hospital.
Soon after the war the owners then donated the park to the people
of Luton for recreation and leisure purposes. There are several
rugby, football and gaelic football pitches in the park. As
well as an 18 hole golf course, a museum and the athletics stadium

The Belles first started using Stockwood Park Athletics Stadium
as their home ground at the start of the 2000/01 season. Since
our formation in 1997 we had a rather nomadic time using various
locations to play our home matches until that time. But after
negociations with Luton Borough Council we secured the use
of the stadium. It was vital to our progress as a club that
we came to this agreement as there were no other football
facility in Luton that offers seperate male and female changing
and toilet facilties, which is a must for most of the leagues
in which we play in. At the beginning the pitch was not in
very good condition, but various council employees championed
our cause and made sure that improvements were made to the
playing surface. Despite that, the lack of drainage on the
pitch often meant that in wet weather parts of the playing
surface became unplayable. However we were able to secure
a grant from Sport England to have new drainage installed
during the Summer of 2003 which will in the long term do much
to improve the surface
